Why This Reference Exists

Printed directories of Wichita residents stopped being published decades ago, but the underlying records never went away. They just split up. Ownership sits with the Sedgwick County, Kansas assessor and recorder. Residency evidence sits in the voter roll under Kansas law. The historical volumes sit in the library's local history room and the state archives. Anyone trying to find a current household or trace a past one ends up visiting five offices and three websites.
